All Skill No Luck (ASNL) recently dropped a new version of their two flagship styles of “combat flannel“: the Ntchwaidumela and Nemean.

Both garments retain the features of their military- and power-sport-inspired predecessors, e.g. front breast pockets tilted inboard, canted shoulder pockets with Velcro closures and hidden buttons on front and cuffs. These are made of a different material, however: they're sewn with double-weight brushed Combat Wool flannel from Cordura.

That's a real type of fabric, as you'll see below, and (spoiler alert), an expensive one.

Combat Wool is a Merino wool blend that according to Cordura is 10,000x as abrasion-resistant than regular wool. It also has a mechanical stretch capability, which contributes further to durability and damage resistance. Online reviews indicate Combat Wool will resist shrinkage (*snicker*) and deformation for many, many washings.

Asked if the new fabric was itchy at all, or if a special under layer was recommended for comfort, ASNL replied, “[we wore it] with just a t-shirt and it wasn't itchy at all.”

There are two styles of the Combat Wool flannel: Ntchwaidumela and Nemean. Yes, the former is difficult to pronounce and the latter is a Hercules myth reference. Both styles are initially available in black and red only, but they hope to expand that palette if this run does well (and anyway, it's not like you have to be matchy-matchy with your ammunition anyway).

For the All Skill No Luck Combat Flannel Release Information:

Ntchwaidumela means “he who greets with fire”; the moniker comes from one of the fiercest lions to ever exist…a lion who The CW version of this garment has evolved slightly from its predecessors. It has a redesigned shoulder pocket with a slightly adjusted angle for better access, an added internal pocket, and a greater depth for additional space.

The Nemean Flannel, being similar to their Napalm design, is a more traditional flannel look. The shirt is named after the Nemean Lion of Greek mythology. That legendary monster could not be killed with mortal weapons because its golden fur rendered it invulnerable to attack. Hercules defeated it, naturally, and the Nemean Lion's pelt became a magical spoil of war. This would seem to make the ASNL shirt, then, the “flannel of the gods” (or at least a demi-god).

All Skill No Luck is a “vetrepreneur” run company headquartered in Oceanside, CA. Chuck Robe, one of the founder-owners, recently explained some of his background with his counterpart, Aaron Russell, and the genesis of All Skill No Luck.

“[When] I met Aaron, we were both working for a local company that made gear and sold weapons kit. We both left after a time and did our own thing for a bit. Aaron calls me one day and says, Dude, I have an idea.

That was all I needed to hear and I was in.

ASNL started as a lifestyle brand with shirts, hoodies, and the like, but it wasn’t enough. Frankly, that shit's boring. When Aaron told me the idea of the first Ntchwaidumela Flannel, aka combat flannel, and I knew it was something special…something different, and definitely not boring.

We got ahold of the lead sewer at our old company and explained what we wanted to do. He got to work helping us pattern and prototype. The first-ever Ntchwaidumela was patterned on the living room floor of Aaron’s house and sewn in the garage on a shit machine with shit material from Joann's Fabrics.

Once we had the prototype next was production. We shopped all over southern CA looking for a place that would make the flannels but no one wanted to be bothered with it. We got quoted outrageous prices just for counter samples. Manufacturing overseas was not an option. Not that we couldn’t, but we refused to. So we said fuck it, we can do this.

We started small, making shirts out of the garage with a little bit better machine and that was it.

Quality was our number one focus. From the living room floor to our own sewing shop and warehouse, and we could have never done it without our supporters.

For you who've worn ASNL flannels before, and liked 'em (which is all the ANSL wearers I've ever met, including me), the fitment of the Ntchwaidumela CW version is, they advise, “about the same as that of previous cotton garments” and the Nemean fits “just like the Napalms” (q.v.). There are sizing charts available in several places on the ASNL website.
